The proposals have been developed with careful consideration of the site and wider parameters. Existing mature trees are to be retained as part of the proposals; root protection areas provide opportunities for pockets of open space throughout the site enhancing the character of the development and providing a strong sense of place.
The scheme preserves the existing Chaucer Wood Court access to the Canterbury Delivery Office and improves public routes throughout the site with a focus on access and desire lines to provide a fully permeable development.
The architecture and design has been carefully considered, drawing inspiration from the surrounding context. Analysis of the local context found there to be no distinctive and defining architectural style with urban environment naturally evolving over time with varying architectural styles. A majority of the surrounding buildings are 2 to 3 storeys in height with the exception of the court building of a much larger scale. Therefore The individual dwellings have been designed to reflect the scale, mass, materials and character of the existing houses and immediate local buildings without replicating them.
A simple but high-quality palette of materials including weatherboarding, brickwork, slate and clay roof tiles is proposed with feature detailing that seamlessly integrates the development into its surroundings whilst giving the development an individual character and sense of place.
